A large attack campaign that has targeted high-profile, verified Twitter accounts with the purpose of spreading Turkish political propaganda.
As McAfee reported, the Turkish hacker group “Ayyildiz Tim” claims to be responsible for the recent spate of attacks that have escalated earlier this week.
The McAfee team provided a timeline of events to include the takeover of Twitter accounts of the UN Indian Ambassador on January 13th, Eric Bolling and Greta Van Susteren (formerly of Fox News) on January 16th.
Attackers were able to access account contacts and send direct messages to victims with propaganda used to trick victims into visiting phishing sites and steal their credentials.
Twitter users and journalist in particular are encouraged to take extra precautions to protect their accounts (such as two-factor authentication) and verify through an alternate channel that links are safe to click.
