Users should be on the lookout for tragedy-related scams taking advantage of tragic events, such as recent Texas school shooting.Â
The National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center (NCCIC) put out a new warning on Monday that scammers are looking to capitalize on such tragic events. For example, cyber criminals send out fraudulent emails that contain links/attachments looking to trick users into visiting malicious websites disguised as charitable organizations requesting donations.
Be wary of fraudulent pleas and requests often found via social media, phone calls, texts and donation websites. Instead, users can visit the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) website ‘Before Giving to a Charity‘ to first review signs of charity scams and checklist to find legitimate charities to use and security safeguards.
